Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) terrified audiences 50 years ago, and its gripping action still holds up today. Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) and Quint (Robert Shaw) wielded some of the most memorable firearms in cinema history—let’s break them down.

The M1 Garand: Quint and Brody’s Shark-Fighting Rifle

Quint kept an M1 Garand aboard the Orca, and when the shark attacked at night, he fired it in desperation. Later, in the film’s explosive climax, Brody grabbed the same rifle and landed the killing shot into the shark’s compressed air tank.

Coast Guardsmen also carried M1 Garands, most notably when they surrounded two boys pranking swimmers with a fake shark fin.

Where Are the Jaws M1 Garands Now?

Stembridge Gun Rentals, a top Hollywood firearms provider, supplied at least two M1 Garands for the film—one for Scheider and one for Shaw. After Stembridge closed, Cinema Weaponry acquired these rifles.

In 2018, Heritage Auctions sold one of the original Jaws M1s to a collector. The other remains with Cinema Weaponry, which loaned it to the NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, VA, where fans can see it today.

Chief Brody’s Sidearm: The Smith & Wesson Model 15

Brody’s duty revolver, a Smith & Wesson Model 15, played a key role in the shark hunt. When the great white circled the Orca, Brody fired multiple shots at it—though the bullets did little against the beast.

The absolute best place to buy and shoot guns in the wider Pittsburgh area. This place is light years ahead from any other gun store. The level of service is impeccable, employees will get out of their way to help and accommodate, and the facilities are 5 star hotel equivalent. There is always an experienced employee supervising all three shooting ranges and they are there to assist in case of a jam or malfunction. This is really a place we are fortunate to have in the area. I now have a membership and recently had a 1-1 class with Mike helping me with my technique. He was unbelievably helpful and cordial. This is a 5 star place.
