Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz (2007) is a brilliant blend of action, comedy, and British wit, paying homage to classic cop films while delivering over-the-top shootouts. But beyond the humor and fast-paced editing, the movie features an array of firearms that play a key role in its explosive finale.

In this deep dive, we’ll explore the guns used in Hot Fuzz, their real-world counterparts, and how they fit into the film’s satirical take on action movies.

1. Heckler & Koch MP5 – The Iconic Submachine Gun

The HK MP5 is one of the most recognizable firearms in cinema, and Hot Fuzz doesn’t shy away from using it. This 9mm submachine gun is favored by military and police units worldwide for its reliability and compact design.

  • Film Role: Used by Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) and Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) during the climactic shootout.

  • Why It Fits: The MP5’s presence reinforces the film’s parody of over-the-top action tropes—small-town British cops wielding elite tactical gear is hilariously absurd.

2. Browning Hi-Power – A Classic Sidearm

The Browning Hi-Power is a 9mm semi-automatic pistol with a rich history, serving as a standard sidearm for British forces for decades.

  • Film Role: Seen in the hands of various characters, including the Neighbourhood Watch Alliance (NWA) members.

  • Why It Fits: Its use by the villainous townsfolk contrasts with their seemingly harmless demeanor, adding to the dark comedy.

3. Remington 870 – The Trusty Shotgun

The Remington 870 pump-action shotgun is a staple in law enforcement and action movies alike.

  • Film Role: Used by multiple characters, including Angel and Butterman, during the final confrontation.

  • Why It Fits: The shotgun’s intimidating presence amplifies the film’s escalation from quirky mystery to full-blown action spectacle.

4. Walther PPK – The Spy’s Pistol

The Walther PPK, famously associated with James Bond, makes a brief appearance.

  • Film Role: Carried by one of the NWA members.

  • Why It Fits: Another nod to action movie clichés—even a small-town conspiracy has a Bond-like villain.

5. Lee-Enfield No. 4 – The Vintage Rifle

The Lee-Enfield No. 4 is a World War II-era bolt-action rifle, showcasing the film’s eclectic mix of firearms.

  • Film Role: Used by a member of the NWA in the final shootout.

  • Why It Fits: Its inclusion highlights the absurdity of a seemingly peaceful English village stockpiling military-grade weapons.

Why These Guns Matter in Hot Fuzz

Hot Fuzz cleverly uses firearms to parody Hollywood action films while maintaining its own unique flavor. The contrast between the sleepy village of Sandford and the excessive firepower creates comedic gold.
