Blood loss is the leading cause of preventable death. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. Emergency responders will arrive as quickly as possible, but bystanders are almost always there first. In the case of disaster and high casualty incidents, emergency services are often spread thin. Rapid control of bleeding at the scene of the event can be life-saving.

As part of our commitment to safety, Keystone Shooting Center is proud to provide Stop the Bleed training courses to children and adults throughout the Pittsburgh area. You’ll learn to do your part of being an active bystander in a variety of scenarios – including both everyday situations and terrorist incidents – and save lives through preventative care.

What Is the Stop the Bleed Program?

Stop the Bleed is a national campaign that the White House launched in 2015. Its goal is to dispell misinformation about traumatic injuries, provide citizens with correct prevention training and encourage bystander participation during bleeding emergencies.

Blood loss is the most common cause of preventable death of Americans under the age of 50. And no matter how quickly medical responders arrive on the scene, bystanders will nearly always be able to act more rapidly. A prepared bystander’s simple actions can save a life. Through the Stop the Bleed program, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond in emergencies and control bleeding using pressure, bandages and tourniquets.

Learning Outcomes of Our Blood Loss Control Training Class

Our bleeding control training class prepares students to be effective bystanders in the event of a car crash, active shooter situation, workplace injury or other trauma. By learning how to use a variety of lifesaving tools, you’ll be able to:

  • Determine safety: Before you can provide adequate care, you must make sure you’re clear of any active threat. Our instructors will teach you how to assess the situation and determine whether it’s safe to approach a victim.
  • Identify life-threatening bleeding: Although calling 9-1-1 is a good start to being an active bystander, it’s essential to start treating bleeding as soon as possible. You’ll learn to identify life-threatening bleeding and locate any nearby items you can use to control the blood flow.
  • Apply pressure: Applying direct force on a wound is one of the best ways to control bleeding if you don’t have access to a blood control kit or other objects. We’ll show you where to apply pressure to stop the bleeding of major wounds.
  • Pack a deep wound: If the wound is deep, gauze or another dressing material can absorb drainage and blood. You’ll learn how to correctly pack the material into a gunshot wound or other deep injury.
  • Apply a tourniquet: A tourniquet can effectively stop blood flow to the wound when used appropriately. However, it can cause severe complications if incorrectly applied. You’ll learn how to apply and tighten a tourniquet correctly to minimize damage to the site.
  • Wait for help: Keeping a conscious victim calm during a crisis can seem overwhelming. We’ll give you tips for keeping both yourself and the victim at ease while you wait for medical personnel to arrive.

The absolute best place to buy and shoot guns in the wider Pittsburgh area. This place is light years ahead from any other gun store. The level of service is impeccable, employees will get out of their way to help and accommodate, and the facilities are 5 star hotel equivalent. There is always an experienced employee supervising all three shooting ranges and they are there to assist in case of a jam or malfunction. This is really a place we are fortunate to have in the area. I now have a membership and recently had a 1-1 class with Mike helping me with my technique. He was unbelievably helpful and cordial. This is a 5 star place.
